Singing from the heart
Birmingham Opera Chorus is famous for its sound. Famous because it is made up of local Birmingham people of any vocal standard. But that said, they sound ABSOLUTELY AMAZING (!!!!!!), as we heard when we went into the space today!
There’s something about this strange space, with its various random elements and surprises (for the audience), that is just so exciting. Everyone was on a real...
The Argyle's alive with the Sound of Music...
We had the children rehearsing in the space on Wednesday, singing AND moving at the same time. Any opera singer will testify as to the difficulty of doing those things together!
Anyway, what they’ve ended up doing is nice and simple. Jon Laird (Chorus Master) has trained them to make a very confident sound. The fact that a bunch of local kids are singing in the scene gives it a very...
Hotting up here – Culture Show in town today filming rehearsals at the Argyle Centre and following participants in tonight’s rehearsal. All exciting stuff but a reminder that the opening night approaches (5th December by the way) and we have to get our act together – literally!!
The space, the final frontier
The space in which we’re performing is big. BBBBIIIIGGGGG! But it’s going to be interesting to see how big it feels with 450 audience, 120 chorus, an orchestra above head height, 60 actors and 60 dancers. We’ll have to fit the opera singers in there too, at some point…!
We had a quick, experimental rehearsal down in the space today. It was a bit of a test to see how things...
Hi there,
The chorus rehearsal was incredibly good and it’s astonishing how well they have progressed already. By next week the singers should be off the books and then Graham can start to rehearse with them on stage.
At the same time I am collecting all information for the programme. There a so many names that need to be spelled in the right way.
The flyer has been designed and needs now...
Hello Birmingham and the rest of the world (wide web),
First let me briefly introduce myself: My name is Luise, I am from Leipzig, Germany, and I’m currently living in Birmingham. British people often ask me why, with all the beautiful cities in England, I chose Birmingham to do my internship? To be honest I don’t know. Maybe some sixth sense as I am enjoying myself, have no regrets, and think...
Once everybody was revved up and ready for taking off the gloves we went downstairs to the wonderful scene. I love it because it is so atypical of the opera and there are so many details to discover such as warning labels like this one:
Dear Audience don’t forget – shoes won’t be allowed on the carpet in the performances area but we will be providing you all with socks when you come to the performance!!!
The actors were rehearsing the opening of Othello with Graham by sorting out their roles and scenes. I can’t disclose too much as it would be no surprise anymore.
Tomorrow I will join the Chorus rehearsal. Let’s see how far...
